You tell yourself that you will get back on track once you are done, but those days turn to weeks and maybe into months? Now you notice that summer is already here and you still behind on your goals. How do you find that push to get you back on track? The answer is very simple; just START! It is easier said than done but once you start you will get that motivation back. Here are a few other things that can help you light that fitness fire once more.

Go back to the basics; if you missed a few weeks off the gym then you know that the infamous DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) is going to return a bit more intense than usual. Many people are scared of DOMS but what we have to understand is that it is totally normal and that it will not harm you in any way. So, going back to the basic movements and exercises will get your body back in the game without too much soreness. If you are like me and like to do many exercises on the same muscle group then just do 2 or 3 exercises the first week and then slowly increment them as the weeks go on.

Go back to the drawing broad; are your goals the same or have you changed your mind? This happens a lot and is important to know so that you do not waste time and effort. Do you want to lose weight or gain weight? You can check my calories article I did a few months ago to know how to calculate your daily calories and how much to consume for weight loss or weight gain. Once you rearrange your goals then it is grocery shopping time. I always suggest that before you do start your new routine that you go buy the food you need. If you can, buy a week’s worth of whole food that will actually help towards your goal.

Making a public commitment will actually help you stay on track according to research. So, shout out yourself in social media or your family and make them see that you are truly going to do it. Want to make it even better? Tell or tag your friends and challenge them to do the same. Some friendly competition can be the way to boost your motivation and get that momentum going. Aside from that you are helping out someone else that may have been in the same situation as you.

Plan ahead and make sure that you will not fall back into your old habits. Once you have a streak going the worst thing you can do is break it, unless of course it is necessary. If you know that in the next few weeks you will go on vacation or have a business meeting, then plan your meals and workouts accordingly. Buy some plastic containers and prep your food beforehand. If you missed your usual morning workout, go later in the evening. The whole idea is to not find excuses, especially if you are truly committed.

Last but not least is to always think and talk positively while being realistic. What? Let me explain. Fantasizing about your ideal weight and body type is not going to get you there. So, do not be sitting on the abs machine thinking about your six-pack abs; get to work! You may not have the best workout one day but it is fine, get your rest for the day and come back tomorrow for another try. Rest is not bad, it is actually essential just do not make the rest last a few weeks.

Hope these few tips helped you out and can utilize them to motivate others to do the same. I can only reach so many people; it is my goal to help you be a role model to others so they can see that they too can do it.
